DAVID AND MARTHA LAURENS RAMSAY is the remarkable biography of an eighteenth century Charleston, South Carolina couple who are representative of an era that tried the souls of the valiant. They received little of this world's goods as a reward for their heroic lives and efforts, but much of its trials.

Martha Laurens Ramsay was the elder daughter of a great United States patriot, Henry Laurens, who as President of the Continental Congress and later as special U.S. envoy to Holland, distinguished himself. For a year he was a prisoner in the Tower of London, and had the American colonies not triumphed, he would have faced death for his patriotic activities.

Mrs. Ramsay was also the sister of John Laurens, close friend of George Washington and special U.S. envoy to France, where he obtained special supplies and a large sum of money for the American cause. An outstanding member of a family to whom America owes much, Mrs. Ramsay spent many years in France. She was typical of the religious woman of that day.

David Ramsay was a child prodigy from Pennsylvania who knew a full and active manhood, in which he accomplished much good. An outstanding Revolutionary patriot, he was exiled by the British to St. Augustine and later served for nearly a year as President of the Continental Congress. From George Washington and other leaders he obtained source material for the excellent histories of the Revolutionary conflict that he wrote. As a skilled practicing physician he introduced vaccination into his state, using his young son as a first subject.

The glory, the glamor, the

vicissitudes of an eventful era in American history are splendidly captured and clearly visualized in this story of a sterling and devoted couple. (From the Dust Jacket)
